Oh, so good! I love the prairie. The vastness is quite amazing if you come from a fairly small country.

Thanks Susanne! It is amazing even if you grew up there too haha. Sometimes I’m floored by the scenery on a clear day and when the clouds lift themselves up a bit higher than they were and you can see the Rocky Mountains on your left and endless prairie on your right, it’s one of the coolest things.

It really is. I have been to Saskatchewan for a road trip, and it was truly amazing. The feeling of standing in the middle of nowhere, where you can see for miles and miles, is just very unique!

My mom is from Saskatchewan and I spent many summers there so I know what you mean.

I love seeing other people photograph Alberta, we get such a bad wrap. I was just in the badlands too, although I was there for the wettest week of the year. Whomp whomp.

Dan Helle's avatar

Tbh it was pretty wet while I was in Alberta. We got lucky when we went to Drum that day. I practically grew up there though, and have explored the badlands quite extensively as a kid with my parents and sister. Lots of adventures to be had there, and being chased by all types of animals haha, it was a common occurrence for us.

I'm about 3 hours north but have spent many a wonderful road trip there. It's now my kid's favourite place so I totally get to relive that excitement all over again and I love it! (also it's still totally wet here, I'm completely over it).

I really like these. Love the panorama and the feel of Alberta, which lends itself so well to it. Really well done. Also really think the b+w works super well!

Thank you, Soren!

This is an incredibly beautiful photo essay. The way your words and the images work together tells such a compelling story.

As an Australian, I’m no stranger to wide-open spaces, but there is something about the way you’ve captured the scale and light of the Alberta prairies that feels entirely unique and difficult to replicate. You’ve managed to capture that vastness perfectly- even more impressive that these were spontaneous phone panoramas!

It’s a beautiful reminder of how nature can completely outshine the noise of politics and division, offering a sense of peace instead. Thank you for sharing these, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what you shot on your FM2 and D750 when you're ready to share them.

Safe travels!

Aw, thanks Julie!I appreciate your thoughtful comment. I can imagine that Australia and Alberta have a lot in common landscape wise, we even have a lot of weird and deadly critters 😬.

I’m eager to get to my other photos from this trip now, as the response to this post is the best I’ve had in months haha.

Thanks for the sub! I’ve done the same, you’ve got some great articles already it seems and I’ll be making my way through them this week.

I’m so glad to hear this post is getting the traction it deserves- it really is beautiful work.

And thank you so much for the sub as well, and the kind words about my own articles! I hope you enjoy diving into them this week.

Excellent set. A remarkable looking landscape, with the mountains seemingly riding straight up out of the flat, open plains. Thanks for sharing.

Dan Helle's avatar

Thank you, Ralph! It really is like that out here, a lot of locals love to call Alberta flat and boring but it’s far from it.

Looks stunning. The ideal place for a road trip.

Dan Helle's avatar

Thanks, Paul. It’s definitely a good place for that, I’ve been on many. Into the Rockies is the best though, nothing beats that drive.

I've done a few around the UK. The biggest, though, was Route 66 in 2013. Enjoyable but I really didn't get on with LA.

This is awesome man! All of the shots are great but those house and building shots are really talking to me. They have that Henry Wessel vibe to them, but in b&w. Love it!

Dan Helle's avatar

Aw thanks, man! Thats a big compliment! I knew you’d dig those houses, they were George coded.
