The pleasures of film photography and vintage cameras 🤣 There’s always a bit of a learning curve. Honestly though, I think your photos are great and wouldn’t have noticed anything “wrong” with them if you hadn’t mentioned it.
Yeah absolutely, I learn that everyday haha. Thanks for that, I agree now looking back. Definitely in the moment, having specific expectations, I should have just rolled with it.
Easier said than done. I find that even when I don’t think I have expectations, I do. It’s hard not to be hypercritical of my own work and get disappointed upon my initial viewing of new scans. I have found that it’s best for me to let my images age for a bit. Oftentimes my opinions on them change.
Looking at these images with a little more tweaking, I'd say you were already vibing with it! Haha. I stand by what I said, though. The camera is working too hard, and it needs to ease back a bit. It'll come with time. I was impressed while troubleshooting, you really did have everything down. I expect a lot of good things to come in the future! The F80 era really saw Nikon putting out some of the most finely tuned film cameras that got made.
Love the stories here. Little gives affinity towards a camera as to having to do a little bit of work on it, and then to have it function properly afterwards. That whirring noise, the shutter advance, goodness, it's all delectable. The images have a good feel to them. Gus, depending on his size, may also contribute to the highlight blooming in harsh sun. Definitely had that happen before, too.
I'm the resident Nikon shooter now? I'll take that moniker with pride! Cheers, friend. Nice to see you blowing up on substack with a Nikon~
Thanks homey! Appreciate all of that and your assistance came in clutch. You’re right, Gus may also be putting in some work, I need to tone him down a bit too as I kinda just let him be for now.
All this means a ton, man. Thanks again, and yes, you’re definitely the Nikon guy round here haha.
i love this so much, esp the metaphor with butter... you are a hilarious writer and can totally relate to the eff ups.. me and my last post with my F6... It happens and there IS a learning curve, may you find yours and ride the wave! <33333
Aw, you’re very kind, Katya! Thanks so much. Well I’m putting another roll through the Nikon as soon as I finish off this Street Savvy I’m putting through my Pentax KM. 🌊🌊🌊
I am yet to own an analog camera that doesn’t put me up on the highest of clouds and also crushes my soul completely. 😂 great write up dude and really love the look of these photos. 🔥
Thanks Ulices! It’s a roller coaster for sure. I’ve had incredible luck up to now having had only a few soul crushers so far. I’m sure that will change quickly when I start developing on my own haha.
It’s such a roller coaster trying out new cameras! I use Nikon for everything and love that I can use my modern digital lenses with my f100, autofocus with film is a god send.
Hah, yes absolutely! And yeah, AF with film is so good, but I have really grown attached to the consistency of manual focus on my Pentax KM, but shooting with it is muuuch slower. Any Nikon lenses you recommend as must haves?
Depends on what you’ll shoot - I use the 24-70 f/2.8 a lot as I photograph lots of events, but their prime lenses are great too. I prefer their 35mm prime but I usually like a wider shot for shooting around streets and whatnot! I also used to use a manual focus 50mm f/1.8 that was really dreamy but would sometimes miss focus on the widest apertures.
I feel your pain! New film cameras come with much anxiety 😅 I love these shots tho, I keep looking at something similar the N90. I’m still very undecided!
Haha, especially new used film cameras. Thanks so much! I’ve read good things about the N90, Razlyn has the N90S if you want some insight, you should reach out.
I love these pictures so much though!!!!! I love my F80 and N90s. Definitely different from the rest of my cameras. But once you get it, it’s gold!!!! I have no doubt you vibe with it sooner than you know and we will be seeing some of your best work. These are all gems that you’ve taken with it.
Thanks Razlyn, yer the best! Yeah, I’ll be using it, my Pentax KM and the 17 exclusively this summer, which will give ample time to get to know it. Gonna be a good summer for film.
Heck yes it will be a great film summer!!!! I’m looking forward to see what you and so many others create!!! Summer is my jam! I come alive in the summer 🤣. I heard great things about both the Pentax cams so I know you’ll post some bangers
Gawd, after this winter and spring, I can’t wait for summer to hit! Yeah The KM is just really consistent being fully manual. Thanks buddy, I know you will too!

Definitely. Ive learned that lesson dozens of time. Thanks for sharing all of that, appreciate it!!
The F80 was the Nikon AF SLR that got me on the F-Mount path and haven’t looked back!
Nice!

It’s such a rollercoaster figuring out a new-to-you camera. Enjoy the ride! Looks like you got some great shots on your first few rolls
Thanks Adam, yeah it took a bit to really like the results but I’m definitely there now.

Maybe. But at least you won’t have anyone to blame but yourself lol
Too true!

I’ve heard good things about their 35mm. The Nikon lenses are so affordable compared to Fuji, too.

Thanks I might just do that :)
